It’s the unspoken magic that invariably unites musicians of different styles and sensibilities. It’s the magnetic force that pulls together genres. It’s what makes music connect cerebrally, physically, and spiritually. Mama Magnolia live on “the soulful side of rock.” The Denver six-piece—Megan Letts [lead vocals, keys], Thomas Jennings [guitar], Zachary Jackson [bass, vocals], Jackson Hillmer [drums], Carrie McCune [trumpet, vocals], and Alex Cazet [saxophone]—would be just as at home in a New York City jazz dive as they would be on forested festival grounds. Like a musical time-warp where Etta James fronted Lake Street Dive, they pepper this brew of soul and rock with boisterous horns, jazzy flavor, gospel heart, classical resonances, and even a little hip-hop swagger…

“If you left it up to me to describe Retrofette’s sound, I would liken it to what might have happened if Broken Bells, Julian Casablancas, Prince, and David Bowie had the chance to record a song together. Is it that good?! Yes, yes it is.” - BolderBeat Magazine June 2018

Denver-based Retrofette is the byproduct of keyboardists Sean Culliton and Xavier Provencher's love for vintage synthesizers and sweaty dance floors. Joined by synth bassist Ben Weirich and drummer Dylan Johnson on stage, the quartet’s brand of 80s tinged synthpop was born in March 2016 and has since garnered a steadfast following.

In June 2018 Retrofette released its latest single, Lover in Japan, a summery dance anthem that inspired by classic 80s new wave. Retrofete has shared the stage with acts such as Anomalie, Magic Sword, Fever the Ghost, and Mark Mallman. They have played on the legendary Red Rocks stage, sold out audiences at Denver venues Hi Dive and Ophelia’s, and were selected as the Best Pop of 2017 act in Colorado by Westword Magazine.

Bands come and go. Some bands stay together because playing feels like being with family. It’s a special moment when that joy flows into the audience and everyone in the room feels like a member of the dysfunctional, loving, hilarious, and groove-oriented family that is Choice City Seven.

Since forming in 2013, this eight-piece, soul-driven funk band has added new family members with every show they play. This band is held together by a talented and textured rhythm section – Logan Doddridge (drums), Sean Jaster (keys), John McKay (guitar), and Jerimiah Teague (bass). The horns bring just the right boom – Greta Cornett (trumpet), John Giordanengo (trombone), Phuong Nguyen (sax). The band is fronted by a charismatic and soulful singer – Chris Leck (vocals).

It started one night in a cramped practice room when 3 members of 12 Cents for Marvin each brought a friend with the goal of exploring and writing new music that sounded like whatever made them feel good at the time, no matter what genre it was. The result is a sound with a wide range, has something for everyone, and is centered on the joy of good music.

2017 marks a new high for the band with the release of their first album Freshman Year. Each song is a snapshot that collectively, makes a family photo album of their musical journey over the past few years. This album of original music can be dark, smooth and firmly rooted in funk, while also light and groovy, reminiscent of 60’s R&B.

So come grab your dancing shoes (and maybe an instrument) and join the party. Choice City Seven will welcome you into the family like a long lost cousin.
